Who can be nominated
The Canadian Philanthropy Awards recognise people whose generosity helps their communities, given freely and without payment. Here is who can be nominated, who can nominate, and how the charity donation works.
The nominee
A nominee can be one person, or a group of people who gave together.
- They live in Canada. Their primary residence is here.
- Their contribution was made without payment. Reasonable out-of-pocket costs that were reimbursed are fine; honoraria or paid time are not.
- Their contribution helped people or communities in Canada.
- Businesses and organisations cannot be nominated. A person connected to one can be nominated for something they did themselves, on their own time and without pay.
- Professional skills count when they are shared freely, outside paid work. An accountant who volunteers at a free tax clinic is eligible; the same work done for a fee is not.
- A nomination can be made in memory of someone who has died, as long as they lived in Canada during the time of their contribution.
Who can nominate
- Anyone can nominate someone. You do not need any connection to the programme.
- You cannot nominate yourself.
- You can nominate more than one person or group. Each nomination is its own form.
- One nomination per nominee, from each nominator.
Recognition and the donation
Each honouree chooses a registered Canadian charity to receive a $5,000 donation, made in their name. Honourees are also recognised on this website and through Beneva and Community Foundations of Canada.
The charity they choose must:
- be a charity registered with the Canada Revenue Agency
- be located in Canada and serve communities in Canada
- be in good standing with the Canada Revenue Agency
- hold a bank account in the organisation’s name
- have a primary purpose that is not political
The donation is made once the charity’s details are received and its eligibility is confirmed.
